Tant per Tant
Tant
per Tant is a non-profit cultural collective
whose goal is to contribute to a dialog between Catalan and Canadian cultures
by translating and producing Catalan and Canadian plays.
Tant per
Tant is open to literary translators, playwrights,
theatre directors, producers and those interested in this genre of cross-cultural
exchange.
The starting point of this collective
was the translation in collaboration with Governor General Award-winning poet,
Anne Szumigalski of the play Vindication of Senyora Clito Mestres
by Montserrat Roig, which was premiered in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (Canada)
in 1997 and later produced in Toronto, Ontario (Canada), Washington DC (USA)
and Belgrade (Serbia).
Tant per tant is a very genuine Catalan
expression meaning “all things considered” or more precisely “measure
for measure”. The expression suggests that one must consider everything
in the search for qualitative equivalence inherent in the art of translation.
In the expression “measure for measure”, both measures weigh the
same, jus as two different languages carry equal weight and meaning in a well
translated play.
